Lirik kruh buat toilet nak buat toiletThe UN's relief agency on Thursday accused Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki of "torturing and imprisoning" the leader of a grassroots group that says it helped expose his regime's use of slave labour.
"We call on the government of Eritrea to release them immediately," Eduardo Stein, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said of two activists held for four years.
Aid workers said they had uncovered a series of mass graves in a remote northern province.
"The conditions in which this disappeared generation of Eritreans lived and died suggest they were subjected to torture and ill-treatment as well as possible other forms of ill-treatment during arrest and interrogation and detention," Stein said.
The two men, Stefan Stein and Fisseha Guelleh, are Eritreans and were involved in the "Genocide in Eritrea" campaign, which highlights the regime's use of forced labour and the lack of access to education.
"We also call on the government of Eritrea to respect international human rights law and to investigate all reported allegations of enforced disappearances and torture, and to prosecute those responsible," Stein said.
Eritrea, which seceded from Ethiopia in 1993, is ranked by Freedom House as one of the worst countries in the world for political rights.
Its anti-terrorism law allows the state to detain without charge people suspected of links to groups it considers to be "terrorist".
Abuses criticised
The campaign, started by the US-based International Republican Institute (IRI), is one of a number of grassroots movements that have been accused of being part of a plot by Eritrea's ruling party to keep its grip on power.
